Obituary Examples
These templates are starting points to help you write an obituary for a loved one during a difficult time. Each one is warm and adaptable. Simply replace the words in [square brackets] with your own details, and add, remove, or change anything to better reflect the person you are remembering. There is no single right way to write an obituary, and South African families honour their loved ones in many different ways, across many faiths, languages, and traditions. Where you choose to publish (a local newspaper, a community Facebook group, a church bulletin, or a funeral programme) and how long the notice is may affect the cost, so it is worth checking word-count charges with the newspaper or funeral parlour before you finalise the wording. Take your time, and do not worry about perfect phrasing. A heartfelt obituary written in your own words is always enough.
